Background of the Study

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges globally, particularly regarding vaccination efforts. Pregnant women, due to their unique health condition, were initially excluded from many vaccine trials, leading to concerns about the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy. However, later studies indicated that COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy is safe and recommended to reduce the risk of severe illness (CDC, 2024). In Benue State, as in many parts of Nigeria, vaccine acceptance among pregnant women has been low, influenced by factors like misinformation, fear of side effects, and cultural beliefs. This study seeks to evaluate the level of COVID-19 vaccination acceptance among pregnant women in the state and the factors influencing their decision.

Statement of the Problem

Despite official recommendations, COVID-19 vaccination rates among pregnant women in Benue State remain relatively low. This is due to limited awareness, myths surrounding the vaccine’s safety, and general hesitancy. Understanding the factors influencing vaccine acceptance among pregnant women is crucial for designing targeted interventions that encourage uptake and reduce transmission risks.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of COVID-19 vaccination acceptance among pregnant women in Benue State.

2. To identify the factors influencing COVID-19 vaccination decisions among pregnant women.

3. To evaluate the effectiveness of health communication strategies in promoting COVID-19 vaccination among pregnant women.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of COVID-19 vaccination acceptance among pregnant women in Benue State?

2. What factors influence COVID-19 vaccination decisions among pregnant women?

3. How effective are health communication strategies in increasing vaccine acceptance among pregnant women?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a positive correlation between maternal education and COVID-19 vaccination acceptance.

2. Misinformation negatively impacts COVID-19 vaccination decisions among pregnant women.

3. Health communication campaigns increase COVID-19 vaccination acceptance in pregnant women.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics in Benue State. Limitations may include recall bias, self-reporting errors, and challenges in reaching rural pregnant women.
